Carnival in Koufonissi

During the period of the Apocreses in Koufonissi the 'Mascari' will be in circulation. A kind of goblins with munchkins and irregular bodies, they roam around the village. They enter the houses and upset them while the housewives are happy to buy them raki and rakomelo. Carnival parties are set up in the shops of the island. It is certain that the mascari will appear here too and they will stir up the atmosphere.

On the last Sunday of the Carnivals the Cultural Association 'Keros' undertakes to exhaust everyone, with the help of many volunteers, in a frenetic all-day carnival party in the centre of the village. Since the morning the carnivalists of the 'Tsouvalades' club are getting ready, and at the same time other groups of carnivalists. Everyone is welcome to join the carnival groups. They meet in the alley of the village and all together with voices and sounds of horns, pots, pans, tubs and whatever else each one has, they go around the village, teasing the inhabitants and inviting them to the all-day feast. The charcoal grills are lit and the grillers prepare skewers, sausages and other meaty delicacies for all the people. Everyone has free access to wine or beer while the village houses bring cooked food. The music and dancing goes on until exhaustion. P.S.: Koufonisians don't get exhausted easily...
