Panagia Church - Keros
A small church in Kero carries a long history.

The chapel in Keros, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was built by three monks. They belonged to the monastery of Panagia Chozoviotissa of Amorgos. They settled in a part of the monastery in Keros, built their cells, a refectory and the chapel. The monks lived with the help of the inhabitants of the surrounding islands.

Το 1820During the Turkish occupation, a Greek from Kranidi who became a Muslim pirate, the so-called Turkodemitris, raided Koufonisia, Schinoussa and Keros. The few inhabitants who were present and helping the monks, resisted and were killed. The Turkdemitrius carried the monks to a hill, to the old castle and killed them by throwing them into a cliff. Then he destroyed the chapel. In the operations against the pirates of Admiral Miaoulis in the Aegean, 115 pirate ships were captured or sunk. Among them the pirate Turkodimitris.

The metochi of Kerou was rented for pasture. The shepherds rebuilt the chapel of Panagia in the same place as the previous one. It is simple without a dome, with stone walls and a roof made of shingles and clay soil.
3 icons were placed, of the Virgin Mary, St. George and St. Nicholas, where they are preserved until today.
