In the area of the present cemetery there were the remains of a Byzantine church dedicated to Agios Nikolaos. Marbles and columns of the church were used in the 1870 in the construction of the church of St. George. At 1972 a piece of land was granted by Kostas Tzavaris next to the ruins of the Byzantine church for the construction of the new church of Agios Nikolaos. The initiative was taken by the priest Stathis, the study was undertaken by the civil engineer Miaoulis and the master builder was Yannis Simos.
The project was interrupted due to financial difficulties. It was resumed after financial support raised by the islanders. The 1982 the new church of Agios Nikolaos was handed over. The day of St. Nicholas, December 6, was designated as a local holiday. After the church service, snacks and wine were offered by local families.
